First Aid for your back pain.

I thought I'd try to give something useful on this blog to help people with their aches and pains.

Many blogs I've looked at show me all sorts of things from "How to pick a lock" to "Giving a bellybutton a makeover". Not the most practical advice and probably wasted a lot of time I could be doing something more useful.

Working as a physical therapist for over ten years now showed me that most people could avoid so many problems with just a few simple steps. So I've decided to post a tip for every week along with maybe a little newsy bits from our life here on Guam. If you have any feedback for us or for this blog please write us at karuso99@yahoo.com . It's good to get an idea if any of this if worthwhile or how to create a more useful site.

Just a disclaimer for those legal eagles, this advice should only be used for personal purposes and under the supervision of a physician. Please consult your physician when undertaking any new exercise regimen.

Tip for the week of beginning December 17, 2007...

The initial steps to follow when low back pain hits is to apply cold pack to the affected area. Please do not leave the cold pack for more than 20min. as it can cause NERVE DAMAGE if left on too long.

The best position is to lie on the back and place the feet onto a chair or ottoman that allows the knees to be at a 90 degree angle.

The easiest way to get up from laying down is to log roll as one unit to the side, allow the legs to drop and push up with the arms from the bed. This log roll method allows the person to avoid twisting at the spine.

Avoid sitting postures for longer than 15 min. Stand and try to extend back as tolerable to help combat the forward flexed postures.

For further exercise regimens to help the recovery process, seek out your neighborhood physical therapist. Remember if it isn't physical then it isn't therapy. :)
